Privacy Overview

In a society where all payments, communications, and clicks are tracked, privacy has become an endangered resource. Whoever owns the internet, owns the destiny of the human species. In a time when tyrannical governments have become increasingly widespread across the planet, the threat of centralizing the internet among a few institutions is clear. Privacy is a fundamental aspect of freedom: the ability to communicate and co-create our lives without interference from third parties. When we can’t control our data, we can’t control our lives.

Now, information on every intimate detail of our lives is centered in the hands of some companies. It is harvested by government agencies without informing us or seeking our permission. This is undermining trust in the internet, choking off innovation, and leaving millions vulnerable to privacy invasions and identity theft. Current models of end-to-end encryption can secure the contents of your communication but not the fact that you’re communicating with someone and when. We know from Edward Snowden that the National Security Agency (NSA) has been bulk collecting metadata, surveilling the entire internet without discrimination. No system available today can protect you from large-scale traffic analysis.

Nym, a new privacy infrastructure designed to address these fundamental gaps in digital privacy. Founded in 2018 by a team of privacy and cryptography experts, Nym is dedicated to restoring privacy as a fundamental human right in the digital realm once more. With its combination of emerging technologies like decentralized mixnets, zero-knowledge proofs, and blockchain-based incentivization. Nym is building a future where surveillance and data exploitation are a thing of the past. Read more

The Problem: Why Privacy Is More Important Than Ever

In the modern hyper-connected world, privacy violations are not just inconvenient, they can be life-altering. Even in democratic states, the unchecked collection of personal data by corporations and governments poses immense harm. The Cambridge Analytica scandal (2018) scandal demonstrated to us how metadata and personal data can be leveraged to engineer public opinion and influence elections. Billions of people unknowingly surrender their data daily to tech behemoths, who sell it for profit or use it to engineer behavior.

Classic privacy technologies, such as encryption, secure the content of messages but reveal metadata. This metadata about with whom you are communicating, when, and how frequently can be as intimate as the content. Nym was created to address this issue, providing an end-to-end privacy solution that also safeguards metadata.

What Is Nym?

Nym is a decentralized, permissionless, and open-source privacy infrastructure that aims to deliver network-level privacy. Unlike other solutions that encrypt content, Nym safeguards metadata so that your online activities are private and untraceable.

So, what is metadata? Metadata is information about the data that you send or receive online.

For instance, when you send a message, the message content is the information, while the metadata contains details about who sent it, to whom it was sent, the time it was sent, and the frequency of your conversation. Metadata can reveal a great deal about what you are doing, with whom you are communicating, and how you are interacting even if the content of what you are communicating is encrypted. This renders metadata highly useful for data collection and surveillance.

Nym’s novelty is that it’s capable of safeguarding both the content and metadata of your communication. Regardless of whether you’re messaging, transacting, browsing the web, Nym renders it impossible for anybody not even exceedingly skilled attackers to trace you. By integrating technologies such as decentralized mixnets, zero-knowledge proofs, and blockchain-based incentivization , Nym provides a privacy layer that can be applied in nearly any use case, ranging from messaging and browsing to transactions and IoT devices.

How Nym Works: A Holistic Approach to Privacy

Privacy is a property of an entire system as a whole, not of any specific part of the system. Even if you use the finest cryptographic techniques to secure one layer of your communication, it will not be private if the other layers are leaking information. Nym seeks to render all internet traffic private across numerous layers by adding a generic system that, by design, can scale to encompass the entire world.

Nym consists of two major parts:

  • A Decentralized Mixnet: This secures users’ network traffic (layer 0), an improvement over models exemplified by VPNs and Tor. The mixnet rearranges and randomizes data packets, effectively making it impossible to trace origin or destination of communications. Read more about how the mixnet functions here.
  • A Tokenized Credential System: It offers application-level privacy and allows users to access the Nym mixnet. It utilizes zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) that allow users to prove something without exposing confidential information. Learn more about Nym Credentials here. We don’t think that it is possible for the communications system we are proposing to function free, on a volunteer basis.

Economic incentives are necessary in order to motivate participation and to prevent network abuse. To this end, the network compels users to use NYM tokens. The tokens serve as payment and are part of the provision of network services. For instance, mix nodes are paid for mixing (the computationally costly but helpful calculation required to forward packets on behalf of other users anonymously) instead of mining.

Designed to be blockchain-agnostic, a Nym blockchain maintains the credentials state and mixnet operations so that the Nym network can be trustless, permissionless, and decentralized. The token also prevents network abuse and serves as an economic disincentive to “spam” the system.

Nym offers more privacy than any isolated application of privacy-enhancing technologies or cryptographic primitives, or ad hoc mixnet for a single application. Since its infrastructure is being utilized by so many varied applications, Nym is able to combine huge, disparate user bases of various applications into a single gigantic crowd. It is revolutionary since, to be anonymous when you’re utilizing a system, you have to be indistinguishable within a group of users and the bigger the group, the more the privacy.

Nym’s Key Pillars: Creating a Privacy-First Future

Nym is based on five foundational principles that establish its purpose and function:

  • Decentralization: Nym runs on a decentralized network, thus no one can hijack or infiltrate the system.
  • Metadata Privacy: Nym is dedicated to safeguarding metadata, which tends to be more informative than the content itself.
  • Interoperability: Nym is made to be fully interoperable with current applications and protocols so that developers can merely introduce privacy functionality.
  • Open-Source and Permissionless: Nym’s code is open-source, so anyone can audit, contribute to, or build on top of it. And because it’s permissionless, no gatekeepers can ever cut off access. Check out Nym’s GitHub repository here.
  • Incentivization: NYM token incentivizes individuals to participate in the network, which enables it to grow and be sustainable. These pillars make Nym not just a tool, but a movement; a global movement to reclaim privacy in the digital age.

The Decentralized Mixnet: The Heart of Nym

At the core of Nym’s privacy stack is its decentralized mixnet. A mixnet is a decentralized network of nodes that reshuffles and delays packets of data to render it uncertain where they came from and where they are going. This renders it all but impossible for adversaries to trace communications, even if they have access to state-of-the-art surveillance capabilities.

Here’s how it operates: When you send data via the Nym mixnet, your traffic becomes encrypted and passes through several nodes. Every node adds a new layer of encryption and mixes your traffic with that of other users. By the time your data arrives at the destination, it’s basically untraceable. Even if another party intercepts the data, they won’t be able to track it back to you.

Nym’s mixnet is decentralized as well, i.e., it’s run by a distributed network of nodes instead of a central entity. This makes it even more secure and robust, since there’s no point of failure. The mixnet also employs Sphinx packets, a type of cryptography which maintains all data packets at the same length, adding another layer of obfuscation for metadata.

The NYM Token: Unlocking the Economy of Privacy

NYM is the native cryptocurrency of the Nym network. It has three important functions:

  • Incentivization: Node operators are rewarded with NYM tokens for providing bandwidth and maintaining the mixnet.
  • Staking: Users can stake NYM tokens to participate in network governance and earn rewards.
  • Payment: The payment for privacy services on the network is done through NYM tokens, i.e., to pay for the utilization of the mixnet or NymVPN. The NYM token is created to align the interests of all the stakeholders in the network so that the ecosystem can be maintained in the long term. Node operators are required to stake NYM tokens to join the mixnet and be rewarded based on their reputation and performance. The tokenized mechanism deters the operators from “selling out” the privacy of users. View the NYM token on CoinMarketCap.

Privacy-Preserving Applications: Empowering Users

Nym’s technology is applicable in a broad array of applications to add privacy to them. Some of these include:

  • Private Messaging: Nym’s mixnet can be utilized by apps so that messages can’t be traced back to the senders or recipients.
  • Anonymous Browsing: Nym can be combined with web browsers to provide users’ anonymous browsing.
  • Financial Privacy: Cryptocurrency wallets and exchanges can leverage Nym to hide transaction metadata.
  • IoT Security: Nym can help secure data from IoT devices so that confidential information is not revealed. Notable applications in the Nym ecosystem include:
  • NymVPN: A decentralized VPN provider that sends traffic through the Nym mixnet, safeguarding user metadata and rendering IP address tracing impossible. Find out more about NymVPN here.
  • Nym Credentials: A zero-knowledge proof protocol for authenticating users or their attributes without revealing sensitive information. Read about Nym Credentials here.
  • Nym Wallet: A wallet for privacy that allows anonymous transactions and staking of NYM tokens.

NymVPN: Privacy Beyond Traditional VPNs

NymVPN is a decentralized virtual private network (VPN) service built on Nym that gives users better online security and privacy. Unlike most VPNs, which are founded on centralized servers and could potentially store information about their users, NymVPN routes traffic via the decentralized Nym mixnet. Through this, users’ web traffic is encrypted and mixed with traffic from other users, making it virtually impossible to track the source or destination of data packets.

NymVPN comes in two different modes:

  1. 2-Hop dVPN Mode: Designed for speed, this mode is best suited for daily browsing, streaming, and gaming.
  2. 5-Hop Mixnet Mode: With enhanced privacy in mind, this mode provides complete anonymity, even from state-level adversaries. NymVPN is trustless, permissionless, and totally transparent. In contrast to traditional VPNs, where you have to trust the provider, Nym’s whole stack is decentralized and open-source, with mix nodes and gateways situated all over the world. Learn more about NymVPN here.

Nym Credentials: Taking Ownership of Your Identity

Nym Credentials is addressing the issue of centralized identity providers such as Google and Facebook holding too much power over our data. Using Nym’s open-source libraries, developers can now implement privacy-preserving authentication into their services and applications with ease. This allows you to log in safely and only share the necessary information, without the risk of your data being connected across various platforms.

The Nym Wallet: Privacy Meets Financial Freedom

Nym Wallet is a privacy wallet that is made to integrate perfectly into the Nym Protocol network. Using the wallet, users can store, send, and receive NYM tokens securely without compromising a high degree of anonymity. The users can also stake NYM tokens to decentralize the network and receive rewards anonymously.

The Nym Team: Privacy Trailblazers

Nym has the support of an experienced team of cryptographers, computer scientists, and blockchain professionals. Its CEO and co-founder, Harry Halpin , is a veteran privacy campaigner who has constructed web cryptography standards at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and taught at MIT. Several of note are Claudia Diaz (Chief Scientist), Dave Hrycyszyn (CTO), and Chelsea Manning (Security Analyst), whistleblower and privacy rights champion. You can learn more about the team here.

Real-World Applications: Nym in Practice

Nym’s technology is already making real-world differences. Here are just a few examples:

  • Activists and Journalists: Activists and journalists working in countries with authoritarian governments employ Nym to have secret communication that cannot be found. With metadata protection, Nym keeps their activities secret even to advanced surveillance networks.
  • Financial Anonymity: Cryptocurrency users use Nym to make transaction metadata unidentifiable to ensure their financial transactions cannot be traced. It is essential for individuals in countries with tight capital controls or money surveillance.
  • IoT Security: Businesses are embedding Nym into IoT devices to safeguard confidential data from interception or tampering. This is paramount in healthcare, where patient information has to remain confidential.

Technical Deep Dive: Nym in Action Under the Hood

Nym’s privacy network is built on the most advanced cryptography methods. Here’s an in-depth look at how it operates:

  1. Decentralized Mixnet: The mixnet follows a multi-layer method of shuffling and packet delaying of the data. It adds a new layer of encryption in each layer, basically making it impossible to track either the source or destination of the data. More on the mixnet .
  2. Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs): Nym ZKPs enable you to confirm that something is accurate without revealing sensitive data. You can, for instance, demonstrate that you are above 18 years of age without revealing your date of birth or precise age. Learn more about ZKPs here.
  3. Sphinx Packets: Nym’s mixnet employs Sphinx packets, a cryptographic method that makes all data packets the same size. Another layer of concealing metadata, traffic pattern analysis is made even more difficult for the attacker.

Challenges and Criticisms: What Nym Faces

Even if Nym is a pioneering project, it’s not without challenges:

  1. Regulatory Scrutiny: Privacy-led initiatives will have regulatory issues, especially in countries that have stringent anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorism financing (CTF) laws. Nym would need to abide by such laws while maintaining its privacy stance. For example, compliance with the EU’s MiCA regulation , which imposes strict transparency and reporting requirements on crypto projects, could pose challenges for Nym’s privacy-preserving model.
  2. Adoption Barriers: It may be challenging to get developers and users to adopt new privacy products when current solutions are extremely widespread. Nym will need to show significant benefits over current solutions such as VPNs and Tor.
  3. Scalability: As it grows, Nym needs to make sure that its network can manage more traffic without sacrificing performance or privacy.

Comparison with Secret, Namada, and Penumbra

Nym is not unique in wanting privacy. Here’s how it stacks up against other privacy platforms:

  1. Namada: Namada is a private blockchain that uses zero-knowledge proofs to support private transactions. Namada has a specific aim towards financial privacy, whereas Nym offers a general-purpose privacy infrastructure that can be used for all sorts of use cases, including messaging and web browsing. Find out more about Namada here.
  2. Penumbra: Penumbra is a solution for the privacy of the Cosmos network. Penumbra addresses private transactions and shielded pools. Nym is more a system-level solution that safeguards metadata between an applications suite. Learn about Penumbra here.
  3. Secret: Secret Network is a blockchain providing private smart contracts. Secret deals with privacy at the blockchain level, while Nym is a network-level solution to be used across any application. Read more about Secret Network here.
